Wow, what a world we live in! We used to be able to go to the record store and buy our favourite records, take them home and play them on our record player. Now it is possible to buy and download music online, and play it on a device within minutes. What else is now possible? Intelligent clothes with bendable batteries, mind reading MRI scans, and driverless buses in the UK. Are our students prepared for this world?
Fairly soon, free wifi and cheaper devices will be available to almost everyone globally. Students will be able to teach themselves because they can access the knowledge they need, anywhere, anytime.
Will a robot take my job in the future? I took a survey and it looks like it's very very unlikely any job that requires empathy cannot be replaced by a robot. So it looks like I'll still be able to teach for a while yet! Empathy is a crucial part to our jobs.
An example to augmented reality technology I've used at school with the students is QR codes. I would really like to learn how to use Aurasma properly as I can see how it can really bring learning to life.
Virtual reality examples are Second Life, Sim City and Minecraft - I have never 'played' these games but I have seen them being played by other adults and students. The whole 'virtual environment' fascinates me though. The idea that people can actually purchase online property and virtual houses is really interesting.
