Week 8 - LDC - Leading Change

Present: Fran, Frank, Lynette, Caitlin and Ruth
Activity 2
Select one of the following change of practice topics. Assume that ‘your’ school is implementing an innovation around one of these topics. In your groups, collaboratively develop a shared Google Doc that outlines how the PPTA change management policy would apply to your chosen topic from the perspective of leading the change initiative (collaborative document)

● Redesigning learning spaces

Redesigning Learning Spaces
Change management policy

  1. Clarifying the proposal - what are we hoping to achieve?
The strategic plan of our school is to improve the achievement results of all learners. We would like to do this in such a way that we prepare our students for the future world. We thus propose that we redesign our learning areas to align our pedagogical practices with the best practice as discussed in educational literature.

2. Assess the proposal - what is the evidence behind the proposal?
The evidence is extrinsic and based upon the rationale that a MLE will improve the academic outcome of the learners. (yet to be peer reviewed).  MLEs are flexible and cheap.  This will facilitate changes in future educational priorities.  Additionally it will allow for the relocation of educational assets to follow changes in demographics.

3. Environmental scan - what practices and procedures might be changed or replaced?
People:
The staff have visited and observed other schools who are running MLE’s and have gained valuable knowledge of how to run MLE’s successfully.
Plant - classrooms:
Currently teachers and students have been working in older classroom blocks and have adapted their programmes to incorporate collaborative teaching and learning in these older classroom setting.
The plan now is to decide which classrooms can be modified to incorporate a more open environment for learning. It is necessary to identify which classrooms will be modified and how.
Funding:
Funding is subject to Ministry approval upon application.

4. Plan the trial - identify and prepare: resources, PLD, timeframe/milestones, measures of success, timetabling, roles, process for terminating the trial. Get feedback on the plan. Get approval to proceed.
In order to make the best use of our new learning spaces we would like to:
Year 1: Research & preparation

  1. Create a strategic group (SG) to evaluate the needs to our teachers, students and curriculum
  2. Staff that visited MLE’s share their experiences with the SG
  3. Run PLD so that teachers learn the best ways of using the new spaces
  4. SG create plans of the new MLE
  5. Share the plan with the staff

Year 2: Create the MLE

5. Provide the Plan - Clear timeline, milestones, expectations, decision date

Term 1: Community consultation
Term 2: Finalise planning
Term 3: Portable classrooms to be moved onsite. Classes to move and set up in portable classrooms.  Demolition of old classrooms. Construction of brand new MLE building will begin.
Term 4: Move into brand new MLE building.

6. Provide PLD - Before, during, ongoing

Before: Teachers have been trialling modern learning practices in existing classrooms prior to redesign. Visit other schools.
During/After: Ongoing PLD with outside providers e.g CORE, Facebook Group, Twitter

7. Inquiry Cycle - Measure/Monitor outcomes, interim reports
