Why should we design learning for learning networks, rather than for formal lessons / classes only?
- learning can be focused on the students' interests, therefore, the students will be more engaged in their work, and take more responsibility for their own learning.
- learning is not just restricted to school, kids can learn outside of school.
- because the teacher and their students are digitally connected, then they are also socially connected. Everyone can learn more by sharing with each other and discussing questions in online forums etc.
- information is not just limited to encyclopedias in the reference section of the libraries. More people have greater access to world-wide resources.
- learning from learning networks mean students are developing their 21st Century Skills.
- being a part of a learning network gives students the skills needed to work in a virtual team when they are adults.
How do we design learning for learning networks, rather than for formal lessons / classes only?
- teachers work collaboratively together with their planning, eg through Twitter, Google+, Google Docs etc.
- share assignments, projects with not only students, but also parents in class/pod Blog.
- use the 'flipped classroom' model - share the video (either one you have made yourself, or one you have found eg Khan Academy) with students, encourage a forum/response to take place to ask/answer questions, then apply new knowledge during activities completed in the classroom.
- Inform parents/caregivers about the 'flipped classroom' and show them examples of the online platforms that can be accessed at home and at school, so school learning and home learning are connected.
- choose topics that are personally interesting and relevant.
